शास्त्रों के अनुसार जो ब्राह्मण बिना तिलक लगाए मंदिर में पूजा पाठ पूजा आरती करता है वह निष्फल हो जाती है और वह ब्राह्मण चांडाल के समान समझा जाता है इसलिए तिलक की उपयोगिता बहुत ही आवश्यक है अनिवार्य है तिलक कई तरीकों का होता है जैसे चंदन का कुमकुम का हल्दी का भस्म का आदि कई लोग जो अपने आप को सूर्यवंशी कहते हैं वह ललाट पर सूर्य के आकार का तिलक लगाते हैं जो अपने को चंद्रवंशी कहते हैं वे चंद्र के आकार का तिलक लगाते हैं जो अपने आप को शिव भक्त कहते हैं वे त्रिपुंड तिलक लगाते हैं कोई सामान्य बिंदी लगाता है और कोई लंबा टीका भी लगाता है तिलक का संबंध मस्तिष्क से होता है दोनों भौहों के बीच आज्ञा चक्र होता है इस चक्र पर ध्यान केंद्रित करने से मनुष्य का मन पूर्ण शक्ति संपन्न हो जाता है इस आज्ञा चक्र पर ही तिलक लगाना चाहिए इसको ही चेतना का स्थान या केंद्र कहते हैं यहीं से समस्त ज्ञान का संचालन होता है आज्ञा चक्र को ही दिव्य नेत्र भी कहते हैं योग करते समय जब हम इस आज्ञा चक्र पर ध्यान लगाते हैं तो यह जागृत भी हो जाता है जिससे हमें आगे होने वाली घटनाओं का आभास भी होता है
हम सब ने यह जरूर महसूस किया होगा कि जब हम दिमाग का या मस्तिष्क का उपयोग ज्यादा करते हैं या जब हमें तनाव महसूस होता है तो हमारे मस्तिष्क के मध्य भाग में पीड़ा होने लगती है तब उसी समय हम उस भाग पर चंदन का तिलक लगाते है तो मस्तिष्क को शीतलता प्रदान करता है हमारा ज्ञान तंतु शांत हो जाता है
कुमकुम का तिलक आयुर्वेद के अनुसार हमारी त्वचा शोधन के लिए सर्वोत्तम औषधि है कुमकुम का तिलक लगाने से मस्तिष्क में कमजोरी नहीं आती कुमकुम हल्दी का चूर्ण होता है इसमें नींबू का रस मिलाने से लाल रंग का हो जाता है हल्दी बहुत ही उपयोगी औषधि है जो हमारे अंदर रोग प्रतिरोधक क्षमता को बढ़ाती है और इसका तिलक हमारे शरीर को स्वस्थ बनाता है
भस्म का तिलक क्या है यह यज्ञ करने के बाद जो यज्ञ कुंड में भस्म होती है उससे जो तिलक लगाया जाता है उसे भस्म तिलक कहा जाता है यह भस्म एक तरह से देवताओं का प्रसाद है क्योंकि इस यज्ञ कुंड में देवताओं के नाम का आवाहन करके ही आहुतियां डाली जाती हैं इसे मस्तक पर लगाया जाता है और खाया भी जाता है और कई लोग तो इसे पूरे शरीर पर भी लगाते हैं
तिलक लगाने का सही तरीका क्या है और यह किस उंगली से लगाना चाहिए तो यह बात स्पष्ट करते हुए मैं बताती हूं कि सीधे हाथ का प्रयोग हमें किसी भी मांगलिक कार्य के लिए या पूजा अर्चना के लिए करना चाहिए तिलक पांचों उंगलियों से अलग-अलग प्रकार से अलग-अलग नियमों के अनुसार लगाया जाता है
1 सीधे हाथ के अंगूठे से तिलक उसे लगाना चाहिए जो अतिथि हमारे घर आते हैं और हम उनका सम्मान के रूप में जो तिलक लगाते हैं उसे हमें सीधे हाथ के अंगूठे से लगाना चाहिए
2 जब हम पित्र कार्य करते हैं या पिंडों को तिलक लगाते हैं तो तर्जनी उंगली का उपयोग करना चाहिए तर्जनी उंगली अर्थात अंगूठे के पास वाली उंगली इससे कार्य शुभ माना जाता है जो कि हम पितरों के लिए करते हैं
3 जब हम स्वयं पूजा अर्चना करते हैं और अपने आप को तिलक लगाते हैं तो उसे तिलक लगाने के लिए हमें अपनी मध्यमा उंगली का प्रयोग अपने आप को तिलक लगाने के लिए करना चाहिए
4 जब हम भगवान को साधु संतों को ऋषि-मुनियों को तिलक लगाते हैं तो हमें हमारे सीधे हाथ की अनामिका उंगली का प्रयोग करना चाहिए
5 जो लोग तांत्रिक कार्य करते हैं वह हाथ की कनिष्ठा उंगली का प्रयोग करते हैं इस कार्य को हमारे शास्त्रों पुराणों में स्थान नहीं है
जब हम शुभ कार्य करते हैं या हवन यज्ञ करते हैं तो हम तर्जनी और कनिष्ठा उंगली का प्रयोग नहीं करते हैं आहुति देते समय हम अंगूठे मध्यमा और अनामिका उंगलियों का ही प्रयोग करते हैं तिलक लगाने का सबसे अच्छा तरीका है कि तिलक बैठकर लगाया जाए खड़े-खड़े तिलक ना लगाएं तिलक लगाते समय तिलक को नीचे से ऊपर की तरफ लगाएं तिलक लगाते समय ललाट पर अंगुली का स्पर्श होना चाहिए उसमें नाखून का स्पर्श नहीं होना चाहिए ध्यान रखना चाहिए कि हमारी अंगुली का अग्रभाग ही मस्तिष्क को या ललाट को छुए तिलक सम्मान सूचक भी है और इसको लगाने से सज्जनता और धार्मिकता का आभास होता है हम तिलक से पहचाने जाते हैं कि हम हिंदू धर्म के संरक्षक हैं
बिंदिया का महत्व स्त्रियों के लिए बहुत है यह स्त्रियों के सौंदर्य को बढ़ाती है और यह उनके सिंगार का अभिन्न अंग है इसलिए जो भी स्त्रियां सौभाग्यशाली हैं पतिव्रता है वे कभी भी अपने ललाट को सुना नहीं छोड़ती हैं हमेशा बिंदिया लगाए रहती हैं उनका श्रृंगार ही पूरा बिंदिया से होता है
